
Visit of Prime Minister of the Czech Republic to Canada

Date : 07.03.2008The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Mirek Topolánek visited Canada on February 28 and 29, 2008. The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Defence Vlasta Parkanová.
In Ottawa, Prime Minister Topolánek met with the Governor General Michaëlle Jean, his counterpart the Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper and the Speakers of both the Senate and the House of Commons Noël Kinsella and Peter Milliken.
Among the main topics discussed by Czech Prime Ministre Topolánek were: the development of bilateral relations; Canada – Czech cooperation in Afghanistan; the Czech Presidency of the European Union in 2009 and international security and economic matters.
On Friday February 29, Prime Minister Topolánek gave a lecture entitled "Significant Eights - Fatefull Milestones in Our History" at the Tabaret Hall of Ottawa University. The delegation later headed to Toronto, where Prime Minister Topolánek inaugurated the project "Neighbours who disappeared" at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, in commemoration of the lives of people who disappeared during the holocaust. The Prime Minister also visited the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto.
Prime Minister Topolánek met with members of the Czech community in Toronto in the presence of the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to commemorate the important anniversaries of the history of the Czech Republic and the former Czechoslovakia – the establishment of an independent state in 1918, the communist putch in 1948 and the 40th anniversary of the Prague Spring in 1968. During the evening, Prime Minister Harper recognised Mr. Josef Škvorecký and his wife Zdena Salivarová for their fight for freedom.
