Nine provincial regions, including Beijing, Inner Mongolia and Ningxia will begin using a new water resource tax. Water conservation is hugely important in China, where per capita water resources are a mere 28% of the global average. The tax will be levied on the use of surface and groundwater, with heftier rates on companies that consume a lot of water, and will discourage water waste among things such as car washes and ski resorts.
