The board of directors of OKD has decided to terminate extraction at the Lazy Mine as of October 31, 2019. The main reason is the fact that themining field is following the extraction of the last mines under existing underground infrastructure considered exhausted. The chairman of the board of directors and executive director of OKD, Boleslav Kowalczyk, added that accessing new supplies of coal would require economically disadvantageous investments totaling several billions of CZK for a period of at least three years. Employees of the mine should following its closure find employment at other OKD localities in the Karviná area. The company’s management also continues to lead talks with the owner about preserving OKD’s long-term outlook until 2024 and about potentially extending extraction until 2030.
