UAE`s ICT sector to hit Dh8.8b by 2011

The opportunities available in the UAE`s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry are growing quickly. The value of the local market is expected to reach $2.4 billion (Dh8.8 billion) by 2011 from $1.5 billion (Dh5.50 billion) in 2006. The country is expected to become the region`s premier ICT hub due to its heavy investments, which are aimed at boosting the technological potential of the country and the benefits of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and its free trade zones. Several major initiatives coupled with regional trade and economic liberalisation are expected to boost IT growth in the UAE. IT in particular has become a driving sector for growth in the UAE. The regional hub is leading the adoption and development of new technologies. Worldwide interoperability for microwave access technology will give rise to more powerful and efficient notebooks, media internet devices and ultra-mobile personal computers due to the reduced power of consumption by 95 per cent.

The Middle East region has emerged as a lucrative market for the growth of ICT industry on account of rapid increase in the demand for ICT products and services. IT has turned out to be a propelling sector for the phenomenal growth especially in the UAE. In terms of future growth of the IT industry in the Mideast, Qatar is on top with 145 per cent growth (during 2007-2011), followed by Kuwait with 17 per cent (2006-2011) and Turkey with 16 per cent (2007-2011) growth.
