Renewable energy (RES) was for the first time a more important source
than fossil fuels in the EU in 2020. 38% of electricity was made from RES,
while fossil fuels were the source for 37% of electricity generation. This
stems from to the State of the Energy Union reports adopted by the European Commission
(EC).
To date, nine EU member states have phased out coal-fired power generation,
13 countries have committed to phase out coal-fired power generation and four
countries are considering possible timetables.
Compared to 2019, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU27 have fallen by
almost 10%. The decline is due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
