American online retailer Amazon is investing in the expansion of its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud in the Czech Republic. The largest global cloud will compete directly with Microsoft and its Azure technology. Amazon has already established its office in the Czech market and hired its first employees. It has other positions open, mainly focused on strengthening its business capabilities.
AWS is similarly expanding in other countries in the region. Analytical company IDC calculates that the cloud market in Central and Eastern Europe will grow by 27 per cent this year up to five billion dollars, roughly CZK 112 billion. Czech companies are also increasingly using the cloud services especially due to reduced costs and flexibility of this solution. However, more companies are planning to switch to cloud in the coming years.
AWS is also planning to strengthen its infrastructure and is about to build its own so-called local zone. That means that AWS will build dedicated servers in the Czech Republic, meaning that customers will be able to use them instead of those based in Europe.
