The ŠKODA AUTO plant in Vrchlabí will be the first of the carmaker’s plant to have carbon-neutral production in 2020. The company informed that the greatest savings in CO2 emissions (from the original 45,000 tons per year to the current 3,000 tons) allows the transition to energy from renewable sources. The plant also carries out twelve projects that will save more than 2,000 MWh of heat and almost 1,800 MWh of electricity. Annual production at the plant will require approximately 47,000 MWh of electricity, of which more than 88% comes from renewable sources. The only remaining fossil source is natural gas, which will be replaced by methane from biogas plants from 2021. The remaining CO2 emissions will be offset by further measures and the purchase of carbon offsets.
