Despite the COVID-19 epidemic, surgeons from the Institute of
Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) performed a total of 542
organ transplants in 2021, surpassing the previous high of 2019.
The surgeons took organs from 169 deceased donors in the IKEM
transplant region and several dozen more from other centres in the
They transplanted 306 kidneys, 143 livers, 41 hearts, 39
pancreases, 10 islets of Langerhans and three small intestines.
IKEM performed 66.2% of all transplants in the country, an increase
of 9% in the last four years.
