The Czech Republic continues to ride the wave of modernisation and plans to implement electronic motorway toll from 2021. Replacing traditional stickers that drivers currently place on their windshield, Czech car owners will newly purchase their licence-number bound highway pass in a few clicks via an app or on the Internet. The virtual ‘sticker’ will be transferable to a different licence plate number and remain available for 1,500 CZK (approx. 65 USD). New car owners will also welcome the possibility to buy a yearly motorway toll, which will expire in 365 days and not by the end of a calendar year. Electronic, hydrogen and hybrid vehicles will be completely exempt from paying the toll in order to promote environmental consciousness. Lower rates will also apply to cars powered by natural gas and CNG. The Ministry of Transport expects a 220 million CZK (9.5 million USD) increase in revenues from toll fees and savings up to 120 million CZK (5.2 million USD) thanks to lower operating costs.
