The country is dissatisfied with the current results of recycling packaging plastics and aluminum.
Czechia is set to implement a deposit-refund scheme for PET bottles and cans starting in mid-2025 as part of its sustainable economy initiatives. The Ministry of the Environment has proposed an initial deposit of four crowns, though the final amount will be determined through a decree related to an amendment of the Packaging Act.
Currently, approximately 1.8 billion PET bottles and 0.8 billion cans are sold annually in Czechia, with a large portion failing to enter the recycling stream—about one in five PET bottles and three out of four cans. The introduction of this deposit-refund system aims to address these challenges and improve recycling rates.
