Czechs are building a giant solar power plant in Chile

Czech Company SOLEK is building its largest project to date in Chile. The Leyda photovoltaic park will have a capacity of 95.2 megawatts, two and a half times larger than the largest photovoltaic power plant in the Czech Republic (Ralsko). It covers an area of 120 hectares, which could accommodate 150 football pitches. Leyda is being built in the San Antonio region of Chile, 90 km from the capital Santiago de Chile.

The Leyda photovoltaic power plant will generate approximately 185 gigawatt hours of green energy annually, equivalent to the consumption of about 23,000 local households in Chile, and avoid 71,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Electricity from the new solar park will contribute significantly to Chile's ambitious plan to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Once operational, the Leyda plant will supply 100 percent of the power generated through a so-called PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) with the Italian company ENEL Green Power. This is a long-term energy supply contract between the green power producer and the customer under predefined conditions.

The project has been designed in accordance with the highest market standards and with environmental considerations in mind. Four hundred direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created during construction. The plant is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2024.

SOLEK Group is now also focusing on new and promising areas such as the development of floating photovoltaic power plants, agrovoltaics and battery storage. SOLEK is a leading energy company engaged in the design, construction and operation of solar power plants in Europe and Latin America. In Chile, it manages nearly forty photovoltaic power plants with a total capacity of over 250 megawatts. By the end of 2023, the entire SOLEK Group had 486 megawatts of solar power plants connected or under construction.
