Czechs dominate in the production of ultralight aircrafts

The Czech Republic is one of the pioneers in the production of ultralight aircraft. This is due to the tradition of the aeronautical industry which spans more than 100 years old and employes 20 000 people across the country. Czech dominance in the ultralight aircraft sector was proven at the 30th edition of the Aero trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Germany, which took place in early April 2024.

In particular, the participants of the fair were interested in Bristell aircraft by BRM Aero, Shark aircraft by Shark Aero, Norden aircraft (Zlín Aviation), VL3 evolution (JMB Aircraft), Sportstart and Harmony aircraft by Evektor-Aerotechnik. The interest was also aroused by the electrically powered gliders Urfin Juice of Blaník Aircraft, whose predecessor (LET Kunovice) became famous in history for the production of all-metal Blaník gliders.

Visitors were also interested in the Blaník Aircraft company, which presented itself at the fair by producing technically complex aircraft components for other manufacturers, but at the same time tested the interest in its novelty - an ultralight glider with electric propulsion Urfin Juice. If there is sufficient interest in this prototype among pilots, i.e. future potential buyers, it plans to embark on certification and preparation for mass production.

According to Jiří Protiva, a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of the Aerospace Industry,  the Czechs have reached the top of the world production of ultralights (ULL) thanks to the interplay of several factors - the long history of aviation in the Czechoslovakia, a good engineering tradition, education, from which many technically oriented experts come, and a good legislative framework within which the Amateur Aviation Association (LAA) helped to anchor ultralights on the domestic market.

For example, last year Czech companies exported goods worth more than 39 mil. EUR to 33 countries in the category of aircraft up to 2,000 kilograms, according to the Czech Statistical Office wheras   26% of the production was exported to the USA and around 20% to Germany.  Overall, cezch export in the aviation industry reaches whooping 90%.

Recently, according to Protiva, manufacturers of ultralight aircraft are trying to establish themselves more in Asian markets, which are still developing rules for the operation of these aircraft, and their systems are not yet aligned with the established EU standards.
