The government emphasizes that the use of digital IDs will be entirely voluntary, although certain public institutions will be required to acknowledge them.

The Chamber of Deputies approved a proposed amendment enabling individuals in Czechia to utilize digital ID cards stored on mobile devices for identity verification. The implementation of digital IDs is expected to commence in 2024. This amendment constitutes a component of the Digital Czech Republic project, which seeks to digitize public access to governmental services.

The proposed amendment to the law allows for the optional use of digital cards. Digital cards will not serve as a substitute for physical IDs and cannot be employed for remote identity verification. Furthermore, digital ID cards will not be applicable for international travel.

As per the law, one's digital identity will carry the same legal validity as the physical document; however, a physical ID must be present for the issuance of the digital copy. The digital ID will not include any supplementary information beyond what is present on the physical card.

As per government directives, institutions will be required to acknowledge digital ID cards in a phased approach. Beginning next year, central state administration bodies must start accepting them. By July, regions and the police will be obligated to recognize the online copies. By 2025, all other administrative bodies, including embassies, will need to accept digital ID cards.
