ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed an early works agreement for the construction of the first small modular reactor at Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, with completion expected in the second half of the 2030s.
Rolls Royce SMR, and Czech power utility ČEZ signed an early works contract on Friday to build the first small nuclear reactor in the Czech Republic.
CEZ said the first reactor is expected to be completed in the second half of 2030s, later than previously indicated mid-2030s, at ČEZ's existing nuclear power plant at Temelin in southern Czech Republic (Reuters).
Two weeks ago, Rolls-Royce SMR—in which ČEZ holds a roughly 20 percent stake—signed a contract with the British government organization Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBE-N) for the construction of the first three small modular reactors at the Wylfa site on the island of Anglesey in North Wales. This is the first contract for small modular reactors of this type in Europe. Now follows a contract, for preparatory work so far, at a second European site, Temelín (Hospodářské noviny). The agreement between ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR comes at a time when global demand for electricity is rising rapidly, driven in part by the expansion of data centers powering artificial intelligence. Technology companies, in particular, are seeking large volumes of reliable, low-carbon energy, and small modular reactors (SMRs) are increasingly seen as a viable solution that is not dependent on weather conditions or exposed to geopolitical disruptions.
At the same time, competition in the SMR sector is intensifying worldwide. The Czech-British partnership is just one of several efforts to bring the technology into commercial use.
Russia remains the most advanced in practical deployment, having operated smaller modular reactors for years. China is also moving quickly, with plans to launch commercial operations of its first SMR project, Linglong One, as early as this year (Kurzy.cz). Konec formuláře
