The Czech automotive industry accounts for 34 % of the manufacturing industry and employs around 500,000 employees including indirect jobs.
In 2023, 1.42 million road vehicles we produced, representing a 14 % year-on-year increase. The number of exported road vehicles also rose from the 1.15 million in 2022 to over 1.31 million road vehicles in 2023. The year 2023 was exceptional for the export of trucks as 1239 were exported, seeing a 97 % increase compared to 2022, as well as the export of buses seeing a 20,6 % increase compared to 2022.
Production of passenger vehicles once again accounted for the majority of motor vehicles produced as Škoda Auto retained the largest share of production in the Czech Republic with almost 62 %, followed by Hyundai (24 %) and Toyota (14 %). The Czech Republic ranked 3rd in passenger vehicle production just behind Germany and Spain in 2023 in EU. It is also among the ten largest global passenger car producers by volume.
Almost 131,000 battery-electric vehicles and over 50,000 plug-in hybrids were produced, accounting for a total of 13 % of the passenger vehicle production in the Czech Republic in 2023.
Additionally, more than 20 electric buses were produced in 2023. The main bus producers are SOR Libchavy and Iveco Czech Republic. The main producer of trucks is company TATRA TRUCKS - the second oldest car factory in the world.
A significant part of the automotive industry is made up of companies that supply vehicle parts and accessories – for example BRANO GROUP, FATRA, GUMOTEX, Kovolis Hedvichov, Gumárny Zubří and so on.
The Czech automotive industry accounts for 24 % of Czech exports. Based on the country's century-long engineering tradition, good infrastructure and skilled workforce, it significantly contributes to automotive manufacturing and R&D.
