Czech company AŽD wins €112 million Rail Baltica contract in Lithuania

Czech railway technology company AŽD, together with its Lithuanian partner UAB FIMA, has secured a major contract from Lithuanian Railways (LTG-Infra) for the modernization of railway signalling and related infrastructure on the Kaunas–Poland border section, including Palemonas railway station, as part of the Rail Baltica 1 programme.

The contract is valued at €112 million, with implementation scheduled over 2.5 years.

Scope of the project

AŽD will be responsible for the core signalling and safety technologies, including:

  • modernization and installation of signalling equipment at 10 railway stations;
  • StationSWing ESA 44 digital electronic interlocking systems;
  • GateSWing PZZ-GTS level-crossing protection systems;
  • FieldSWing LED railway signals;
  • PointSWing point machines;
  • axle counters with ALSN coding;
  • integration of the supplied technologies into the central DaVinci traffic control system.

UAB FIMA will provide the telecommunications systems, cable networks, power supply systems and associated construction works. The Lithuanian partner will also provide 20 years of technical support.

Strategic importance

The contract builds on AŽD's existing technology base in Lithuania. The company has previously supplied signalling equipment for the Kaunas–Kybartai corridor and subsequently won contracts for further modifications and extensions of the signalling system on the Kaunas–Kazlų Rūda section. One of these contracts, for four electronic interlockings and electronic automatic block equipment, was valued at more than CZK 43 million.

The latest contract represents a significant increase in the scale of AŽD's activities in Lithuania and provides the company with a major reference within the Rail Baltica programme. The tender process was subject to complications and delays, but the contract was ultimately concluded with AŽD and UAB FIMA.

The project also reflects Lithuania's strict requirements concerning the origin and ownership of critical railway technologies. AŽD had to demonstrate that its ownership structure has no links to Russia, Belarus or China and that the supplied technologies are of Czech origin and manufactured in the Czech Republic.

AŽD's latest Lithuanian contract strengthens its position in the Baltic railway technology market and adds a €112 million project to its growing portfolio of international signalling and railway infrastructure projects.
