Skoda Group today presented to the customer the first four-car electric train destined for the Bulgarian rail operator. Under a contract signed in September 2024, Skoda will deliver a total of 25 units by August 2026, for a contract value of CZK 13 billion, including 15 years of full-service maintenance.
The new trains — developed in Plzeň and Ostrava — are based on the proven platform used in Czech and Slovak regional traffic, but feature a number of upgrades, especially in electronics, safety, comfort and accessibility. Each unit offers over 300 seats, is capable of up to 160 km/h, and comes equipped with climate control, modern interior design, a CCTV-backed information system and the advanced ETCS Level 2 safety standard.
According to Škoda, about 80 % of components are supplied by Czech subcontractors — making this contract significant not only for Škoda, but for the entire Czech rail-vehicle industry. The company hopes that this deal — its first rail contract for Bulgaria in modern history — will pave the way for further business opportunities in the Balkans.
For Czech companies active in rail manufacturing or rail-related supply chains, this contract underscores the export potential to Southeastern Europe — and could open new avenues for cooperation.
