Novo Nordisk Invests Over €320 Million in Czechia, Strengthening Europe's Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing

The Czech Republic has reinforced its position as an attractive destination for high-value pharmaceutical investment following Novo Nordisk's decision to invest more than €320 million (CZK 8 billion) in its manufacturing facility in Bohumil, Central Bohemia. The investment ranks among the largest recent projects in the Czech pharmaceutical industry and highlights the country's growing role in advanced biomanufacturing.

Novo Nordisk selected the Czech Republic based on several competitive advantages, including its highly skilled workforce, long-standing expertise in protein manufacturing and a well-established life sciences ecosystem. The company has been present in the Czech market for more than three decades, making this expansion a natural progression of its long-term commitment to the country.

The investment demonstrates that the Czech Republic is increasingly viewed as a destination not only for manufacturing but also for technologically sophisticated production requiring specialised knowledge, advanced infrastructure and stringent quality standards.

The new facility will manufacture proteins used in next-generation medicines for chronic diseases, including diabetes and obesity. The project follows Novo Nordisk's acquisition of the site from Novavax in late 2024 and an extensive modernization programme that transformed the former vaccine production plant into a state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The investment included significant upgrades to production technologies, digital infrastructure and quality management systems to align the plant with Novo Nordisk's global manufacturing standards.

Beyond its national significance, the project strengthens Europe's capacity to manufacture strategically important biological medicines. As global demand for innovative therapies continues to rise, expanding European manufacturing capabilities has become a strategic priority for improving supply chain resilience and reducing dependence on external production.

The Bohumil facility will become part of Novo Nordisk's global manufacturing network, supporting the company's growing portfolio of treatments for chronic diseases.

The expansion is expected to create new opportunities across the biotechnology and healthcare sectors, encouraging collaboration between pharmaceutical companies, research organisations, universities and innovative technology providers.

For suppliers of advanced manufacturing technologies, laboratory equipment, digital solutions, cleanroom technologies, automation, process control systems and engineering services, investments such as this create significant opportunities to become part of the pharmaceutical value chain.

Novo Nordisk's investment reflects a broader trend of global pharmaceutical companies expanding advanced manufacturing capacity in Central Europe. As demand for biologics and innovative medicines continues to grow, the Czech Republic is increasingly positioning itself as an important hub for high-value pharmaceutical production.

The project also reinforces the country's reputation as a location where skilled talent, technological expertise and a supportive investment environment come together to attract world-class investors.
