Czech Military and Universities Kickstart Quantum Computing Revolution

Czech defence and academia join forces with IBM to gain quantum computing access, aiming to train experts and boost innovation.

The Czech Republic is preparing for a major leap in computing. The Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), together with several other universities and the Czech military, will sign a memorandum granting access to IBM’s most powerful quantum computers next week. Funded largely by the Ministry of Defence, the initiative marks a significant investment in quantum technologies.

Quantum computers process data via atomic states and quantum mechanics—unlike classical machines—and promise exponentially faster performance for certain tasks. They could revolutionize drug development, optimization, and also quickly break current standard encryption. While fully functional quantum systems are still years away, current basic models with tens of qubits already hold transformative potential. CTU is responding by launching a master’s program in quantum informatics to cultivate a new generation of specialists. A contract signed last year with IBM grants remote cloud access to its quantum systems for research and education. According to CTU spokesperson, usage of IBM’s quantum resources is growing “among the world’s top”.

This move places Czech institutions and the military in a strategic position to engage with the emerging quantum realm, fostering expertise and innovation aligned with global defence and technological trends.
