Reconstruction of Iconic Kotva Department Store Begins After 50 Years

The historic Kotva department store in Prague, a symbol of Czechoslovak modern architecture, is undergoing a major renovation. The project aims to modernize the building while preserving its cultural and architectural heritage.

The iconic Kotva department store, opened in 1975 as a symbol of modern Czechoslovak retail, has commenced a significant reconstruction project after 50 years of operation. Located in the center of Prague, Kotva is known for its unique hexagonal architectural design by Czech architects Věra and Vladimír Machonin.

The reconstruction will update the building to meet contemporary retail and office standards while preserving its architectural heritage. The project will enhance Kotva’s energy efficiency, introduce modern technologies, and provide a more comfortable shopping and office environment. Developers emphasize maintaining the original architectural elements that have made Kotva a symbol of Prague's urban landscape.

In addition to technical improvements, the reconstruction is expected to transform the department store into a vibrant destination for both shopping and leisure, combining retail spaces with cultural and dining areas. The developers aim to complete the renovation by 2027.

Kotva remains a significant cultural and architectural landmark in Prague. The modernization project not only respects its historical value but also aims to secure its relevance for future generations.
