Prague’s €7 billion rail upgrade to revolutionize urban transport

Prague is set to undergo a major transformation in its railway infrastructure with a €7.3 billion modernization project aimed at expanding capacity, easing congestion, and improving travel efficiency. As the city’s rail network reaches its limits, this initiative will provide much-needed upgrades to accommodate growing passenger and freight demands.

The plan includes the construction of 10.6 kilometres of tunnels and five new underground stations, with a key feature being a two-level underground extension beneath Prague’s main station. These tunnels will allow up to 16 trains per hour in each direction, improving the separation between regional and long-distance transport. New underground stops at Karlín, Wenceslas Square, Karlovo Square, and Florenc will improve accessibility and shorten travel distances.

Prague’s growing metropolitan area has made the need for better integration between regional and urban transport more urgent. The project is expected to shift a significant portion of commuter traffic from roads to rail, reducing emissions and noise pollution while enhancing the efficiency of public transport. Officials highlight that the strengthened railway system will relieve pressure on the busiest sections of public transport and provide a more sustainable alternative to car travel.

With the plan now incorporated into strategic transport policies, the Czech government, local authorities, and Správa železnic (SZ), the national rail infrastructure manager, will collaborate to bring the project to life. Once completed, this modernization will reinforce Prague’s position as a key transport hub in Central Europe, providing a faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly rail network.
