The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen is a Czech research university focused on engineering, AI, cybersecurity, materials and applied sciences, with strong industry links and innovation output.
The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB) is a major Czech public university founded in 1991 and located in the city of Plzeň, a key industrial and innovation hub in Western Bohemia. It consists of nine faculties, including engineering, electrical engineering, applied sciences, economics, law, philosophy, education, design and art (Ladislav Sutnar Faculty), and health care studies, as well as specialised university institutes.
The university educates approximately 13,000–15,000 students and offers a broad portfolio of study programmes at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, including a growing number of English-taught programmes. UWB plays an important role in the regional innovation ecosystem and maintains close cooperation with industrial partners, public institutions, and international research organisations.
A key strength of the university lies in its engineering and technology-oriented faculties, particularly the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which focus on research in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, control systems, advanced materials, and applied mathematics. The university is also home to the Research and Innovation Centre for Electrical Engineering (RICE), which supports applied research and technology transfer in cooperation with industry.
