A milestone in preserving the country’s brewing tradition.
The Czech Republic has officially recognised its beer culture as part of the nation's intangible cultural heritage, marking a significant step toward potential UNESCO World Heritage status. This acknowledgment places Czech beer culture alongside other esteemed national traditions, such as handmade glassmaking, and puppetry.
The nomination, prepared by the Czech Beer and Malt Association in collaboration with experts, reflects the country's dedication to preserving and promoting its rich brewing heritage. With this designation, the Czech Republic joins Germany and Belgium as the third European nation to recognise beer culture as an intangible cultural asset. Belgium's beer culture was added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, setting a precedent that Czech brewers hope to follow.
Petr Slunečko, a representative involved in the nomination process, stated, "We make no secret of our ambition to achieve UNESCO recognition. Now, we must demonstrate that we can preserve and develop our beer culture before taking the next step."
