Czech Republic advances large-scale battery storage development

The BESS Lipnice project marks an important step in the transformation of the Czech energy sector, supporting renewable integration, grid stability and new business opportunities in modern battery and energy technologies.

The Czech energy group SUAS Group plans to build one of the country`s largest battery storage facilities in the Sokolov region, supporting the transition from coal to modern, flexible energy infrastructure.

The project, known as BESS Lipnice, has been in preparation for several months, with a contractor selected in 2025. Battery storage will provide balancing services for the grid and energy trading, reflecting the growing role of flexibility technologies in the Czech electricity sector.

The investment reflects a broader shift in the Czech energy sector, where storage is becoming crucial for integrating renewables and stabilising supply. Regulatory changes and market conditions are expected to drive a significant expansion of battery projects in the coming years. The development highlights a fast-growing technology segment in the Czech Republic with strong potential for international cooperation. Opportunities for companies exist in battery technologies, grid software, engineering services, project investment.
