Toyota Motor Europe (TME) has opened an automotive mega-hub at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic plant in Kolín, which will be used to finish Toyota and Lexus vehicles based on customer requirements. In addition to the Czech Republic, the hub will be used by the company's other European plants around Europe, with up to 350,000 cars passing through it annually.
"TME
has invested EUR 17 million in the construction of the logistics centre, which
is the largest in Toyota's European plants", i.e. approximately CZK 429
million according to the current calculation, said Robert Kiml, president of
Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic, at the opening ceremony. The Kolín
mega-hub will employ 50 to 60 people and will serve Germany, Austria, Slovakia,
Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic as Kolín is connected to several
European factories by rail.
The Kolín
plant now produces two models of internal combustion engine cars, the Aygo X
and the Yaris, the latter also in a hybrid version. Toyota management will decide
whether Kolín will also start producing electric vehicles at the end of this
year or early next year. According to Kiml, the Kolín plant is on a shortlist of
European plants.
The Kolín
car plant has produced 191,206 cars by the end of October this year, up about
25 percent year-on-year. Almost half of the production was made up of Yaris HV
hybrids. However, last year's production was significantly affected by
unplanned shutdowns due to shortages of certain parts. There have been no significant
shutdowns in this year's production so far.
