Stronger Partnership between Europe and Indonesia

The 9th KAS-CSIS: Trade and Competitiveness in a Changing Global Landscape: Building a Stronger Economic Partnership Between Europe and Indonesia

Today’s 9th KAS–CSIS conference in Jakarta highlighted how global trade is being reshaped by protectionism, shifting supply chains, and the search for “de-risking without decoupling.”

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, presented a strong message to European investors: the country is focused on speed, certainty, and openness. New licensing reforms such as service time (SLA), the Fiktif-Positif principle, and the fully digital OSS RBA system are designed to make doing business faster and more transparent. Combined with tax incentives, import deregulation, and expanding Local Currency Transactions, Indonesia aims to attract more European investment under the EU–Indonesia CEPA framework.

The discussions also touched on the global impact of the U.S.–China trade war, with experts outlining strategies for exporters to adapt — from reconfiguring supply chains to diversifying markets. The idea of a “Future Mega Bloc” linking CPTPP and RCEP countries through EU agreements showed how the next phase of global economic integration might look.

It was an insightful day exploring how Europe and Indonesia can build a fair, predictable, and forward-looking partnership in an era of global change.
