On Friday, Panasonic formally unveiled its new Pilsen heat pump production plant. With a dedicated research and development centre, the CZK 8 billion complex seeks to provide energy-efficient heating solutions to the European market. By 2030, the factory can produce up to 1.4 million indoor and outdoor heat pumps a year at full capacity.
After operating in Pilsen since 1996, the opening represents a major expansion for Panasonic. The company started off making televisions but in 2018 switched to heat pumps. The new building almost triples the company's production space to 140,000 square meters. The growth, according to company officials, is a reflection of the rising demand for renewable energy solutions throughout Europe.
The initiative boosts Czech industry and demonstrates the nation's capacity to draw in high-tech investments, according to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who attended the inauguration. He placed a strong emphasis on the development of highly skilled professions and the fusion of scientific research and production.
With an expenditure of over CZK 600 million, Panasonic has
set up a European research and development centre at the Pilsen location in
addition to production. From original design to final product testing, the
centre will supervise the entire air-to-water heat pump development cycle.
To assess heat pump performance, the new R&D centre will have labs that can
replicate harsh environmental conditions. In partnership with organisations
like the Technical University of Ostrava and the University of West Bohemia,
the centre intends to hire dozens of engineers in mechanical and electrical
disciplines.
Panasonic's investment demonstrates the company's sustained dedication to Pilsen. With more than CZK 27 billion in Czech investments since its first one in 1996, the company has grown to become the biggest Japanese investor in the nation.
