Škoda's vision of sustainabtility and increase of EV market share in the Czech Republic

Škoda Auto is gradually moving towards the highest possible level of sustainability that can be achieved in the automotive industry. By 2030, it is said to be carbon neutral.

"The total share of electric vehicles in production is now ten percent for the domestic market, the global figures are even higher," comments Andreas Dick, Chairman of the Board of Škoda Auto. "With the arrival of the Elroq, we expect the volume of electric cars to grow significantly, with good design and features and low affordability. With this car, we will support the electric car market in the Czech Republic," he adds.

In 2023, the automaker expanded battery production for all-electric vehicles on the MEB platform, and the current capacity is 1,500 traction batteries for pure electric vehicles. This makes the plant in Mladá Boleslav one of the largest producers of these components in the entire Volkswagen Group. The company supplies batteries not only for the Enyaq, but also for the Group's other brands.

In June this year, Škoda Auto launched a tomography centre for the analysis of high-voltage batteries. The workplace is capable of using a tomograph to display the internal structure of the battery in very high resolution without the need for mechanical penetration inside the battery. In the event of a fault in the battery, the carmaker's staff are able to discern exactly where a disconnected connector is, for example, and ideally repair only the faulty part. They do not have to dismantle or possibly destroy the entire battery.

Moreover, one of Škoda's goals is sustainability and carbon neutrality at all Czech sites by 2030. It is taking various steps, including the use of recycled plastics, sensible waste management. As a matter of the fact, sustainable materials will play an increasing role in the production, use, repair and recycling of cars: materials that do not cost a lot of energy to produce and are easy to recycle, but also renewable, natural and recycled raw materials. Already, 85 per cent of the weight of Skoda cars is recyclable, and the new Skoda Octavia, for example, uses recycled fabrics in the Lodge and Sportline interiors, or eco-friendly leather, which uses sustainable materials, including coffee bean husks, to tan it.

Sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars in the Czech Republic are slowly increasing thanks to the support of the Czech Government, unlike in Western Europe, where demand is on a downward curve. At the same time,  the network of charging stations is being developing, which contributes to a sufficient density in relation to the number of electric vehicles.
