Czech Astronaut Set for ISS Mission in 2027

Czechia is set to send astronaut Aleš Svoboda to the ISS in 2027, highlighting the country’s growing space industry and expanding international cooperation.

Czechia is set to reach a major milestone in space exploration as Czech Army pilot and ESA reserve astronaut Aleš Svoboda prepares for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) in the second half of 2027. The mission, based on an agreement between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Vast, will see Svoboda serve as mission pilot, pending international approval. If confirmed, he will become the first Czech astronaut to visit the ISS, marking a new chapter for the country’s space ambitions.

The mission is part of the national Czech Path to Space initiative, aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities while promoting science, innovation, and international cooperation. It highlights Czechia’s growing role in the global space industry, with companies and research institutions contributing to satellite systems, advanced engineering, and software solutions in collaboration with partners such as ESA, NASA, and SpaceX.

At the same time, Czechia is actively expanding its international partnerships. For example, in May 2026, it showcased its space ecosystem at the SPEXA – Space Business Expo in Tokyo, one of the world’s leading events focused on space technologies and industry cooperation. A joint delegation of government representatives and innovative companies presented the breadth of Czech expertise and highlighted its innovation capacity. The event created valuable opportunities to engage with key global players, including JAXA, NASA, and leading Japanese industry representatives, further reinforcing Czechia’s visibility on the international stage and confirming Japan as a highly promising partner for future collaboration.

Together, these developments position Czechia as a dynamic and reliable partner in the international space sector. With a strong industrial base, a highly skilled workforce, and an expanding global presence, the country offers attractive opportunities for international collaboration and investment, further strengthening its reputation as a provider of advanced, high-value space solutions.
