Czech Republic Eyes New Nuclear Power Plant with Advanced Technology

ČEZ is accelerating its push into small modular nuclear reactors with a planned facility in Tušimice, marking a bold shift in the Czech Republic’s energy future. In partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR, the project aims to repurpose old coal sites with innovative, factory-built nuclear units.

The Czech Republic is set to undergo a major shift in its energy strategy as ČEZ moves forward with plans to deploy small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The company has launched the environmental impact assessment process for a new nuclear facility at Tušimice in Northern Bohemia.

This new plant will feature three SMRs, each with a capacity of 470 megawatts. Developed in collaboration with Rolls-Royce SMR—backed by significant investment from ČEZ—the project marks a major milestone in the modernization of nuclear energy.

A key innovation lies in the modular design of the reactors, which will be produced in factories and assembled on-site, allowing for streamlined construction and scalability. With an expected lifespan of 60 years, these units promise a cost-effective alternative to traditional nuclear power.

If plans stay on track, construction could begin in 2034, with operations starting around 2038. Additionally, an initial SMR is already planned for installation at the Temelín nuclear power station ahead of the Tušimice project.

Repurposing former coal plant sites, like Tušimice, adds environmental value to the initiative. However, while the potential is high, the technology remains in the development phase and has yet to be proven in live operational settings.
