Czech Republic Sees Rapid Growth in Business Owners

Entrepreneurship in the Czech Republic is booming, with the total number of business license holders surpassing two million for the first time in three years, driven by both domestic and foreign entrepreneurs.

In the first half of this year, nearly 46,000 new entrepreneurs registered business licenses in the Czech Republic, continuing a strong upward trend that has seen the total exceed two million. This growth is significantly supported by foreign nationals, with Ukrainians accounting for about 14 percent and Slovaks three percent of new registrations. Prague remains the leading region for new business formations, followed by Central Bohemian, South Moravian, and Moravian-Silesian regions.

The recent surge builds on record growth rates seen in 2022 and 2023, with nearly 172,000 new entrepreneurs added over these two years—the fastest expansion in more than a decade. The rise in entrepreneurship positively impacts the Czech economy by addressing local market demands and enhancing the availability and quality of services. Although over two million hold business licenses, only about 60 percent are currently active, with the rest classified as dormant.

However, the share of active entrepreneurs has been growing steadily, indicating a vibrant and dynamic business environment. According to Kateřina Klosová, chairwoman of Dun & Bradstreet Czech Republic, this persistent entrepreneurial interest supports economic resilience and fosters regional development across the country.
