Czech President Petr Pavel met with Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during his official visit to Japan, highlighting the importance of Czech-Japanese cooperation in politics, security, and economic development.
During his visit to Tokyo, Czech President Petr Pavel was formally received by Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace. Their half-hour meeting focused on the overall quality of relations between the Czech Republic and Japan, particularly in areas such as diplomacy, international cooperation, and mutual support for Ukraine. According to Pavel, the discussion remained apolitical but underlined shared values and a positive trajectory in bilateral ties.
Following the imperial audience, President Pavel held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Both leaders emphasized the long-standing and friendly relations between their countries, agreeing on the need to deepen cooperation further. Key topics included Japanese investment in the Czech Republic and opportunities for expanded collaboration in defence, aviation, and information technologies.
The two sides also addressed current global security issues, including their respective positions on China, Russia, and North Korea. Pavel expressed appreciation for Japan's support of Ukraine and emphasized the importance of continued cooperation within international frameworks such as NATO. He also acknowledged Japan’s historical role in supporting the Czech Republic’s post-1989 economic transformation.
Pavel noted that the meeting with Ishiba came at a politically sensitive time, as the Japanese prime minister is under pressure to resign following a poor result for his ruling coalition in recent upper house elections. Despite media speculation about a possible resignation, Ishiba has denied such reports.
President Pavel arrived in Japan earlier in the week. His itinerary included visits to Himeji and Hiroshima, and participation in the Czech National Day at the World Expo in Osaka. The Expo, running through October, showcases international partnerships and innovations.
President Pavel’s visit reinforces the Czech Republic’s commitment to strengthening ties with key partners in the Asia-Pacific region, with Japan playing a central role.
