Czech Phage Technology in Latvia: A Platform for Innovative Medical Cooperation

On 28 January 2026, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Riga in cooperation with CzechTrade Baltics office organized a workshop on bacteriophage therapy, presenting Czech scientific and biotechnological expertise to Latvian partners. The event demonstrated how economic diplomacy can effectively support innovative exports while strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The workshop gathered representatives of Riga Stradiņš University, the State Agency of Medicines of Latvia, the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre, and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, alongside Czech biotech companies. Expert presentations covered research, clinical application, regulatory frameworks, and investment opportunities, while also creating space for direct networking and future partnerships. The event was prepared in cooperation with CzechTrade Baltic States.

The Czech Republic as a Phage Innovation Leader

Bacteriophage therapy—using viruses that specifically target bacteria—offers a promising response to the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance. The Czech Republic has become an important player in this field, combining strong academic research with dynamic biotech entrepreneurship.

Companies such as MB Pharma and FAGOFARMA are developing and producing phage-based products for clinical use, expanding both scientific knowledge and export potential. The sector is further supported by CzechBio, organizer of Viruses of Microbes 2026 in Prague under the auspices of the International Society of Viruses of Microbes.

Strategic Opportunity for Cooperation

Latvia’s innovation strategy prioritizes biomedicine and biopharmaceuticals, creating favorable conditions for collaboration in advanced biotechnologies. The Riga workshop marked an important step toward joint research projects, clinical pilots, and technology transfer initiatives.

The growing Czech–Latvian partnership in phage therapy highlights how scientific excellence and economic diplomacy can combine to advance innovative medicine while opening new opportunities for international cooperation.
