In a significant move to enhance energy security, Czech energy company ČEZ has, for the first time, managed the complete logistics of transporting a liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from the United States to the Netherlands.
Previously, ČEZ would purchase LNG and take delivery at the terminal. This time, the company handled the entire process, including negotiations with the U.S. liquefaction terminal, chartering the vessel, managing customs and insurance, and overseeing the transatlantic voyage.
The 300-meter-long tanker, carrying 170,000 cubic meters of LNG, arrived at the Eemshaven terminal in the Netherlands in mid-May. ČEZ has leased part of this terminal since 2022, and to date, 51 ships have delivered gas for the Czech Republic through this facility.
By controlling the full supply chain, ČEZ aims to strengthen its expertise in commodity trading and enhance the Czech Republic's energy independence. "This valuable experience allows us greater flexibility and improves the security of our gas supplies," said David Viduna, ČEZ's LNG manager.
Looking ahead, ČEZ has secured capacity at the Eemshaven terminal until 2027 and has also arranged for approximately two billion cubic meters of gas annually from 2027 through a new onshore terminal under construction in Stade, Germany. The company continues to explore additional opportunities to acquire capacity in other LNG terminals.
