Czech government approved its updated National Climate and Energy Plan

The plan provides a strategic roadmap for the country’s energy transformation by 2030, aligning with European Union climate goals

The Czech government has officially approved its updated National Climate and Energy Plan (NECP), marking a significant step toward advancing green policies and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The plan provides a strategic roadmap for the country’s energy transformation by 2030, aligning with European Union climate goals.

The updated NECP sets ambitious targets, including increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix from the current 18% to over 30% by 2030. It also reaffirms the government’s commitment to phasing out coal as an energy source by 2033, with energy companies suggesting that rising emission allowance costs could lead to an even earlier transition. To support these changes, the government has estimated the total required investments at CZK 2.8 trillion.

In contrast to earlier drafts, the finalized plan places stronger emphasis on renewable energy and nuclear power as the cornerstone of the future energy mix, while also expanding the role of gas as a transitional source. A key component of the plan is the development of a robust replacement strategy to ensure energy stability and reliability following the coal phase-out.

Environment Minister Petr Hladik highlighted the broader economic benefits of the NECP, projecting a 2% boost to GDP. He also underscored the plan’s potential to enhance energy security, with a target of reducing the Czech Republic’s reliance on foreign energy imports from the current 40% to approximately 26% by 2050.

The NECP aims to position the Czech Republic as a leader in sustainable energy, combining economic growth with environmental responsibility while ensuring long-term energy independence.
