Czechia supports gaming startups: a new accelerator for game projects in the gaming industry

Prague is strengthening its position in the gaming industry. A special accelerator for computer game development has just started operating in the capital, helping young talents turn their ideas into working projects.

The program offers mentoring from professionals, financial support, and access to a network of experts, which is an excellent opportunity for emerging game developers. The accelerator was created in cooperation between the Prague Innovation Institute and the city of Prague, with a key role played by the Czech Technical University in Prague – Faculty of Electrical Engineering, where students create their own games as part of the "computer games" course, combining programming with game and graphic design.

Out of all the applicants, five teams were selected into the accelerator. The creators particularly appreciated the mentoring directly related to their games and the opportunity to improve their game design and marketing strategy.

The Czech gaming sector has a strong tradition and global success – titles such as Beat Saber, Arma, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which have sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide, come from Czechia. Last year, Czech game studios had a turnover of CZK 6.5 billion (approximately 267 million EUR). According to estimates by the Statista portal, the European gaming market should grow at a rate of 9–10 % per year between 2024 and 2030, reaching 44 billion EUR by 2027. The success of Czech games is also confirmed by the sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Prague-based Warhorse Studios – two million copies were sold in the first two weeks and now over three million, bringing the studio revenues of three billion crowns (approximately 123 million EUR).

"The accelerator combines technical skills with mentoring, legal support, and business plan preparation. We want students to leave not only with a game in progress, but also with a clear vision of how to succeed in the global market," says Katarzyna Kouba Sanojca of the Prague Innovation Institute.

The project shows that Czechia is not only a country of traditional exports such as automobiles, beer and glassware, but also a place where innovative products with international reach are created. The gaming industry is developing rapidly here and offers opportunities for foreign cooperation, investment, and technological partnerships.
