Břevnov Monastic Brewery (Břevnovský klášterní pivovar sv. Vojtěcha)
A monastic brewery in Prague continuing an unbroken brewing tradition dating to 993, housed in a Baroque former-stables building, with a focus on craft brews, heritage, and educational public engagement.
Břevnov Monastic Brewery traces its origins to the foundation of Břevnov Monastery in 993, marking the first documented instance of beer production in what is now the Czech Republic. Brewing persisted here until 1889, before being discontinued for centuries. In 2011, the tradition was revived with the establishment of a modern brewery located in the monastery’s renovated Baroque stable buildings. The facility houses a permanent exhibition of beer glassware and a small brewing museum, and a hop field planted in front of the brewery underscores its connection to historic hop-growing traditions. Annually, the brewery produces up to 4,000 hectoliters, offering around 20 beer styles—including six permanent varieties and a range of seasonal or barrel-aged specialties—in bottles and kegs. The on-site Klášterní šenk taproom and guided tours enhance public engagement with its history and brewing process.
