The European Space Agency (ESA) has approved the Czech-led SOVA-S mission for implementation, marking the first Czech-led mission to successfully pass ESA’s competitive selection process. The achievement represents a significant milestone for the Czech space sector and further strengthens the country's position within the European space industry.
The SOVA-S mission, designed to observe atmospheric gravity waves from low Earth orbit, has been selected for implementation by the European Space Agency following a highly competitive evaluation process under ESA’s Earth Observation FutureEO programme. The mission is coordinated by Czech company OHB Czechspace in partnership with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and a consortium of European scientific and industrial partners, with launch planned for 2030. By collecting unique data on atmospheric gravity waves, SOVA-S will improve the understanding of atmospheric dynamics and contribute to more accurate weather forecasting, climate modelling, and the safety of aviation and satellite operations.
The successful selection demonstrates that Czech companies and research institutions are increasingly capable of leading complex international space missions, moving beyond the role of component suppliers to become prime contractors for strategic European projects. The mission also showcases the strength of the Czech space ecosystem, bringing together industry, research organisations, and public institutions in the development of advanced space technologies.
As the first ESA mission under Czech leadership to reach the implementation phase, SOVA-S represents an important achievement for the country's innovation ecosystem and further reinforces the Czech Republic's reputation as a reliable and competitive partner in the European space sector.
