Czech Republic invests in Temelín: nuclear plant modernization to boost efficiency and safety

The Czech energy company ČEZ launched a new phase of modernization at the Temelín nuclear power plant in 2026. The CZK 3.1 billion investment aims to extend the facility’s operational life, increase efficiency, and prepare it for higher electricity production for the Czech grid.

ČEZ continues its modernization program, part of the Czech Republic’s strategy to increase the share of low-emission energy sources and ensure stable electricity supply. The program includes fuel cycle adjustments, extending the period between fuel replacements from 12 to 14 months, with plans to eventually reach 16 months. This will significantly improve operational efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.

The investment also involves upgrading the control systems, including broader use of artificial intelligence to enhance safety and reliability for both reactor units. The first unit already operates partially with the new system, while the second will undergo upgrades during 2026.

The project will continue until 2029, and ČEZ expects the modernization to enable an average annual production of up to 32 TWh from its nuclear power plants, strengthening the country’s energy security and supporting climate targets.

According to ČEZ representatives, the new modernization program demonstrates how the Czech nuclear industry can effectively combine traditional energy sources with state-of-the-art technologies, contributing to safe, stable, and environmentally friendly electricity generation.
