Czech-Swedish Collaboration Advances Eco-Friendly Solar Technology

A team of Czech and Swedish scientists is making significant progress in developing environmentally friendly and cost-effective solar cells.

Researchers from the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in partnership with Linköping University in Sweden, have designed organic solar cells that eliminate toxic solvents and heavy metals, offering a greener alternative to traditional silicon panels. Their findings were published in the scientific journal Nature Energy.

This collaboration, ongoing for over five years, focuses on developing advanced materials for solar energy. The Swedish team, led by Professor Feng Gao, specializes in discovering new materials to enhance efficiency and sustainability, while Czech researchers contribute expertise in structural analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

The result is a lightweight, flexible, and more sustainable solar cell, with potential applications in areas unsuitable for traditional panels, such as transparent window coatings or interlocking roof tiles. This innovation represents a major step toward energy self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
