Czech AI Expert Elected as Rector of Czech Technical University

Michal Pěchouček, a leading Czech expert in artificial intelligence, has been elected the next Rector of the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT). He won a majority of votes from the university’s Academic Senate, defeating two other candidates.

Pěchouček will assume office in February 2026, following formal appointment by Czech President Petr Pavel. His four-year term will see him lead one of Central Europe’s oldest and most prestigious technical universities, home to about 18,000 students across eight faculties.

A long-time professor at ČVUT’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Pěchouček founded and led the university’s Center for Artificial Intelligence. His research focuses on multi-agent systems, machine learning, and cybersecurity. Beyond academia, he has held senior roles in the private sector, including as Chief Technology Officer at Gen Digital (formerly Avast), where he has helped bridge academic research with industry innovation.

His election marks a continued shift toward digitalization, applied research, and stronger cooperation between academia and the technology sector – areas in which Czech universities are increasingly engaging with international partners, including in the United States.
