Czech Oven Maker Bets on America's Artisan Bread Boom

From a village of just 2,500 people in South Moravia to some of America's most ambitious artisan bakeries, Czech oven manufacturer Kornfeil is proving that global expansion does not always begin in a major industrial hub. As demand for premium bread reshapes the U.S. baking market, the family-owned company is preparing its biggest move yet across the Atlantic.

As American consumers increasingly embrace artisan and sourdough bread, Czech bakery equipment manufacturer Kornfeil sees a rare opportunity for expansion. The family-owned company is preparing a major push into the U.S. market, including plans to establish a permanent local presence as demand for premium baking continues to grow.

Czech bakery equipment manufacturer Kornfeil, headquartered in the South Moravian town of Čejč, is preparing its most ambitious expansion into the United States to date. The company, which specializes in high-end professional baking ovens, is responding to a steady transformation of the American bakery market, where consumers are increasingly seeking artisan, small-batch, and naturally fermented bread instead of traditional mass-produced loaves. To capitalize on this trend, Kornfeil is evaluating the establishment of a dedicated U.S. subsidiary and the relocation of part of its Czech team to provide local technical support, customer service, and project management.

Founded shortly after the Velvet Revolution in 1989 by Karel Kornfeil, the company has evolved from a small family business into an internationally recognized manufacturer of premium bakery equipment. In recent years, ownership and management have been successfully transferred to the second generation, with sisters Martina and Barbora Kornfeilová leading a strategic restructuring focused on innovation and export growth. Today, Kornfeil supplies bakeries across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, while maintaining all development and manufacturing activities in the Czech Republic.

The United States has become one of the company's most promising export markets. Kornfeil has already completed projects for bakeries in New York and Los Angeles and is currently expanding into Texas and Colorado. A milestone came last year when the company delivered 35 identical professional ovens for a large bakery project in Denver, its largest U.S. order to date. According to the company's management, the contract demonstrated that Kornfeil is capable of delivering large-scale, standardized projects while maintaining the product quality and technical support expected by American customers.

The company's confidence in the U.S. market is backed by broader consumer trends. Although industrially produced bread still accounts for the majority of sales, the artisan baking segment has expanded steadily over the past decade. Consumers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for handcrafted bread made with natural ingredients, longer fermentation times, and traditional baking methods. This shift has fueled rapid growth in independent bakeries, specialty cafés, and premium grocery chains, creating new opportunities for suppliers of advanced baking technology. With an estimated 78,000 bakeries operating across the United States, Kornfeil believes the market still offers significant room for expansion.

Building that presence, however, requires more than simply exporting equipment. The company recognizes that American customers increasingly expect local service, fast technical assistance, and close communication throughout the installation process. This is one of the main reasons why management is considering establishing a permanent U.S. office. Finding employees willing to relocate overseas remains one of the challenges accompanying the expansion, highlighting the practical realities many growing exporters face when entering distant markets.

Alongside geographic expansion, the company continues to invest heavily in technological innovation. One of its most ambitious research projects is a thermal-oil energy storage system designed to capture excess solar energy during the day and use it to power baking ovens long after sunset. The technology could significantly reduce energy costs for commercial bakeries while improving sustainability, and a patent application is currently pending.

Like many exporters, Kornfeil also faces external challenges, including fluctuating shipping costs, changing tariff policies, and the complexities of transatlantic logistics. Nevertheless, the company says it intends to keep prices stable this year while continuing to strengthen its position in one of the world's largest and most dynamic bakery markets. As artisan bread continues to gain popularity across the United States, Kornfeil hopes its Czech-made ovens will become an increasingly familiar sight in American bakeries.
