In 2024, the Czech Republic invested over CZK 35 billion (about USD 1.5 billion) in environmental protection, prioritizing clean water, air quality, and climate action. These investments continue a steady trend of strong annual spending on sustainability and green infrastructure.
The largest share of funds went to wastewater management (33%) and air and climate protection (26%), reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its water treatment facilities and reduce industrial emissions. Most investments were directed to the industrial regions of Moravia-Silesia (15%) and South Moravia (13%).
In addition to capital projects, operational spending on environmental protection reached a record CZK 100.7 billion (USD 4.3 billion) – up 7% year-on-year. The majority of these costs were linked to waste management (66%) and wastewater treatment (20%).
Environmental services also play a growing economic role: in 2024, companies in this sector generated CZK 74.5 billion (USD 3.2 billion) in revenue, with waste management again leading the way.
The data come from the newly released publication Environmental Protection Expenditures – 2024 by the Czech Statistical Office, which tracks both investment and operational spending across regions and industries. The report highlights how green investments are increasingly intertwined with the Czech Republic’s broader economic strategy.
