Czech Republic to Establish National AI Factory and Supercomputer

The Czech Republic has secured a major boost to its digital innovation ecosystem with the creation of the Czech AI Factory (CZAI) – one of six new Artificial Intelligence Factories selected by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). The project, led by VSB – Technical University of Ostrava, brings together a consortium of six leading Czech institutions and will include a new high-performance AI supercomputer named KarolAIna. The initiative aims to accelerate AI development and adoption across industry, academia, and the public sector.

CZAI will serve as a national hub for AI innovation, providing computational resources, technical expertise, and training programs to support startups, SMEs, researchers, and public organizations. Building on the success of the Karolina supercomputer operated by IT4Innovations, the new KarolAIna system will feature roughly 340 state-of-the-art AI chips, delivering up to 850 PFlop/s of performance for advanced AI workloads. This infrastructure will enable Czech and European users to train, deploy, and experiment with AI models on a large scale.

According to project leaders, CZAI represents a significant milestone for the Czech innovation landscape. “With the new AI supercomputer and the expertise of our partners, the Czech Republic is making a decisive step toward becoming a strong contributor to European AI excellence,” said Igor Ivan, Rector of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. The project also underscores the country’s growing role within Europe’s coordinated efforts to strengthen digital sovereignty and global competitiveness in AI.

Valued at nearly CZK 1 billion (EUR 40 million), the Czech AI Factory will be co-funded by EuroHPC JU and the Czech government. Beyond its computing infrastructure, the initiative will establish new AI campuses in Prague and Brno, complementing the existing hub in Ostrava. Together, these sites will foster talent development and cross-sector collaboration, positioning the Czech Republic as not only a user but also a creator of trustworthy, sovereign European AI solutions.
