U.S.A.
A Czech startup Lightly Technologies is drawing attention in the United States with technology that could help authorities better track and identify illegal drugs. Brno-based company has developed a portable analytical device capable of recognizing the unique chemical composition of substances and linking them to specific production sources or distribution networks.
The company is already testing the solution with police departments in the U.S., including in Huntsville, Alabama, while also holding discussions with organizations such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Interpol. The technology is designed to support investigators directly in the field without the need for lengthy laboratory analysis.
Using ultraviolet radiation and spectrometry, the device creates what the company describes as a “chemical fingerprint.” Even substances that appear identical can contain subtle chemical differences depending on how and where they were manufactured. By comparing these fingerprints, investigators can identify connections between seizures, map trafficking routes, and potentially uncover larger criminal networks.
The innovation comes at a time when the United States continues to face a severe fentanyl crisis. Synthetic opioids remain one of the leading causes of overdose deaths across the country, creating strong demand for technologies that can improve detection, tracing, and prevention efforts.
Founded by Monika Štěpánová and Lukáš Nejdl, Lightly Technologies recently secured investment from Czech investment group JSK Investments SICAV, associated with entrepreneurs Simona Kijonková and Jaromír Kijonka. The amount of the investment has not been publicly disclosed, but the funding is expected to support further development and expansion into international markets.
In addition to law enforcement applications, the company sees broader potential for this technology in areas such as pharmaceutical verification, counterfeit product detection, and food safety control. Its long-term goal is to build an extensive international database of chemical fingerprints that becomes increasingly accurate and valuable as more samples are analyzed.
Fentanyl in the United States
Fentanyl is an extremely powerful synthetic opioid that suppresses the central nervous system and can quickly lead to respiratory failure and death. Because of its potency, even very small amounts can be lethal, particularly when mixed with other substances such as heroin or cocaine.
According to publicly available data, fentanyl overdoses have claimed the lives of approximately 400,000 Americans over the past decade.
