The Danish company Novo Nordisk will manufacture ingredients for a new generation of diabetes and obesity drugs in the Czech Republic.
The company has invested several billion crowns in the plant in the village of Bohumil, near Jevany in the Central Bohemian Region.
In 2024, the company purchased the factory in Jevany from Novavax for $200 million. Novavax manufactured components of its COVID-19 vaccine at the plant and employed 450 people in 2020. Previously, Baxter produced swine flu vaccines there; medicines and serums have been manufactured at the site since the 1920s. The facility belonged to the state until 2001.
According to experts, obesity treatment is currently one of the most lucrative segments of the healthcare industry; it is estimated that tens of millions of people worldwide use injectable medications from Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly in the GLP-1 class. These medications are also available in the Czech Republic, but they are not covered by public health insurance for the treatment of obesity. The treatment costs patients several thousand crowns per month, and it is usually long-term or lifelong.
