One of the oldest universities in the world, Charles University in Prague, is significantlly developing one of its campuses with an ambitious project that involves the construction of two major research and education centers – the Biocenter and the Globecnter, with a combined investment of nearly 0.5 billion CAD.
The Biocenter will focus on medical and biological sciences, providing state-of-the-art facilities for research in biochemistry, metabolism, cellular systems, infection, immunity, genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics. It will also delve into chemical synthesis, material research, and nanotechnology. The Globecenter, on the other hand, is designed as an interdisciplinary hub for studying global changes, including climate change, geodynamics, and socio-economic impacts. It will support research in geoinformatics, geostatistics, and ecosystem biodiversity.
Both centers aim to foster a collaborative and innovative environment for students and researchers, featuring modern lecture halls, teaching laboratories, seminar rooms, and social spaces such as cafes and exhibition areas. The project emphasizes energy sustainability and integrates the latest architectural designs to blend with the historic Albertov neighborhood.
The university aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and advance scientific knowledge through these new facilities that should be in operation in 2026.
