Czech Republic Enters the Race to Host One of Europe's AI Gigafactories

The Czech Republic has taken a major step towards becoming one of Europe's key centres for artificial intelligence. The Czech Government has officially approved the country's participation in the European AI Gigafactory Initiative, paving the way for a project that could become one of the largest digital infrastructure investments in the country's history. If selected by the European Commission, the project will bring an investment of approximately CZK 100 billion (around €4 billion). The financing model foresees CZK 70 billion from private investor České Radiokomunikace, while the Czech Government and the European Commission would each contribute approximately CZK 15 billion.

The AI Gigafactory initiative forms part of the European Union's strategy to strengthen its digital sovereignty and create world-class computing infrastructure capable of supporting the development of next-generation artificial intelligence.

Unlike conventional data centres, AI Gigafactories are purpose-built facilities designed to host tens of thousands of high-performance AI accelerators. These centres will provide the computational power needed to train advanced AI models while supporting research institutions, universities, startups and industrial companies across Europe.

The Czech proposal envisages locating the AI Gigafactory at an existing data centre in Prague's Zbraslav district, leveraging existing infrastructure while creating one of the most powerful AI computing facilities in Central Europe.

The recent approval by the Czech Government represents a crucial milestone in the country's bid. It authorises the Ministry of Industry and Trade to participate in the European procurement process through the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, enabling Czech partners to compete for one of the AI Gigafactory projects being established across Europe.

According to the government, hosting an AI Gigafactory would significantly strengthen the country's technological independence, support scientific research and improve access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure for Czech companies and public institutions.

One of the greatest advantages of hosting an AI Gigafactory would be access to world-class computing capacity. Today, training advanced AI models requires enormous computational resources that remain inaccessible to many startups, SMEs and research organisations. The Gigafactory would provide Czech universities, research institutes and innovative companies with significantly greater access to high-performance computing, accelerating the development of AI solutions in healthcare, manufacturing, cybersecurity, mobility and other strategic sectors.

This could also strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, helping commercialise research and attract further international investment.

The AI Gigafactory initiative reflects Europe's broader ambition to reduce dependence on non-European AI infrastructure and create sovereign computing capacity capable of supporting future economic growth.

For the Czech Republic, participation would reinforce its position as an emerging technology hub in Central Europe while demonstrating its ability to contribute to strategic European initiatives.

If the Czech bid is successful, the project would become one of the country's largest technology investments to date, attracting international expertise, supporting highly skilled jobs and strengthening the competitiveness of Czech industry for years to come
