U.S.-based semiconductor company onsemi is further strengthening its presence in the Czech Republic through a strategic acquisition of part of the Brno-based firm Codasip. The move signals a long-term commitment to expanding research, development, and chip design capabilities in the region. This acquisition will enable the company to significantly expand its R&D and chip design center in Moravia, complementing its existing manufacturing operations in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm.
The acquired unit specializes in developing energy-efficient processors based on the RISC-V architecture, an open-source alternative to widely used ARM technology. This is a strategic fit for onsemi, whose chips are widely used in automotive and industrial applications—sectors that increasingly demand highly efficient processing solutions.
Through this acquisition, onsemi not only gains valuable intellectual property but also access to a team of highly skilled engineers. These experts will join the company’s existing Czech workforce, which is already considered among the top in sensor and chip design, particularly for automotive applications.
The expansion does not stop with the acquisition. Onsemi is reportedly planning to further grow its Czech engineering base, with ambitions to hire more than 100 additional specialists in the near future. This highlights the increasing importance of the Czech Republic as a hub for semiconductor innovation within Europe.
In addition, onsemi will gain access to Codasip Studio, a software platform used for designing and customizing chips, further enhancing its technological capabilities and development efficiency.
This acquisition aligns with onsemi’s broader investment strategy in the Czech Republic. The company is already preparing a major investment—estimated at around ZAR 34.6 billion—to expand its production of advanced silicon carbide chips. These chips are critical for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and AI data centers. The Czech Republic has thus become a key pillar in onsemi’s European operations, combining advanced manufacturing with cutting-edge research and design.
By integrating processor design capabilities with its existing manufacturing and development infrastructure, onsemi is positioning itself to deliver more comprehensive and energy-efficient semiconductor solutions. The acquisition also reflects a broader industry trend toward vertical integration and localization of high-tech capabilities within Europe.
As demand for semiconductors continues to grow—driven by electrification, AI, and digitalization—onsemi’s expanded presence in Czechia underscores the country’s rising importance in the global technology supply chain.
