Škoda Auto is entering a new and strategically crucial era. Following the expansion of traction battery production in Mladá Boleslav, the Czech carmaker has become the largest battery systems manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group.
A nearly CZK 5 billion investment has elevated Škoda Auto’s Mladá Boleslav plant to the position of the largest producer of battery systems across the entire Volkswagen Group.
The company’s main Czech facility now operates a new 55,000 m² production hall manufacturing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell-to-pack battery systems. This technology integrates cells directly into the battery pack, eliminating the need for modules. As a result, production costs are reduced by up to 30 percent while increasing overall energy density.
The plant currently produces more than 1,100 cell-to-pack battery systems per day — up to 335,000 systems annually — for electrified vehicles across the Volkswagen Group. Production is approximately 84 percent automated, with 131 industrial robots operating on the line. A new battery system is completed every minute.
The project also represents a major milestone in decarbonising both manufacturing and vehicles, while reducing dependency on third-party suppliers. In parallel, Škoda Auto is transitioning to more sustainable energy sources, including the conversion of its heating plant from coal to biomass. From 2027 onwards, this move is expected to cut emissions by approximately 274,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
The new battery facility enables the potential domestic production of up to 200,000 electric vehicles per year and has created 600 new jobs. However, Škoda Auto is no newcomer to battery manufacturing. Since 2019, employees and robots in Mladá Boleslav have assembled approximately 1.4 million battery systems.
The investment marks an important step in strengthening the Czech Republic’s role in the rapidly expanding electric mobility sector.
This year, Škoda Auto’s electric vehicle portfolio will expand further with two new models. Alongside the Enyaq and Elroq, the company will introduce the flagship SUV Peaq and a new compact crossover.
